Downtown St. Louis Construction Update: Phase 2 of City Foundry, 21c Museum Hotel Opening and America’s Center Expansion

As a firm born and raised in St. Louis, we’re always excited to share exciting construction projects happening in our own backyard. Below are a few downtown projects we have been keeping an eye on, including Phase 2 of the City Foundry, the 21c Museum Hotel opening, an expansion of the America’s Center and new luxury apartments by the CITY SC stadium.

City Foundry STL Update

Earlier this year, the city issued permits for Phase 2 of the City Foundry redevelopment. This includes a residential tower and parking garage along with an office building that will become St. Louis’s first mass-timber building. 2022 will also see several national brands coming to the City Foundry. Puttshack, from the makers of Top Golf, is a tech-infused mini-golf attraction that will have four custom courses along with a bar and restaurant. Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, a dine-in cinema, and City Winery, an upscale restaurant and private event space, are also slated to open later in the year.

21c Museum Hotel St. Louis

Projected to open in early 2023, 21c Museum Hotel St. Louis will provide 173 guest rooms along with exhibition, meeting, and event spaces. The hotel, which is located in the restored YMCA building at 1528 Locust Street, will also include a free contemporary art museum open 365 days a year that will showcase exhibits and interactive, site-specific art installations.

America’s Center Convention Complex Expansion

After many delays, the expansion of the downtown convention center is finally underway. The $210 million project will add a 72,000 square foot exhibit hall, expanded and reconfigured loading docks, and enhancement of the Washington Avenue entrance. Also in the works is a 61,000-square-foot ballroom and an 80,000-square-foot outdoor plaza. The hope is to attract larger conventions and conferences to St. Louis. Work on the first phase is expected to be completed by February 2024.

Butler Brothers St. Louis

Construction has begun on the historic Butler Bros. building, which was acquired by the Memphis-based Development Services Group late last year. The $130 million redevelopment will include 384 apartments, coworking offices and a restaurant/bar on the street level. A few amenity highlights include a rooftop space overlooking the CITY SC stadium, a pool, a walking track, an interior courtyard, an enclosed garage and a dog spa along with many design features to accommodate residents working from home.
