Missouri Annual Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday Weekend Begins August 1  

The annual Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday for Missouri will begin on Friday, August 1 at 12:01 am. It will run through midnight on August 3, giving parents, educators and all taxpayers a weekend to purchase qualifying items exempt from all state and local sales tax.  

During the Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday, Missouri retailers won’t charge state and local sales tax on the following items: 

Clothing Items 

Eligible items are any “article of apparel intended to be worn on or about the body” not exceeding $100, which would include, but aren’t limited to: 

  • Tops 
  • Pants 
  • Dresses 
  • Footwear 
  • Disposable diapers (adult and infant) 
  • Cloth or other materials to make school uniforms 
  • Other school clothing 

Non-qualifying items include: 

  • Belt buckles 
  • Handkerchiefs 
  • Handbags 
  • Jewelry 
  • Scarves 
  • Ties 
  • Umbrellas 
  • Watchbands 
  • Watches 

School Supplies 

School supplies are considered to be items which are used in a standard classroom for educational purposes, and shouldn’t exceed $50 per purchase. Supplies include, but aren’t limited to: 

  • Art supplies 
  • Book bags 
  • Backpacks 
  • Calculators 
  • Chalk 
  • Computer software (with a taxable value of $350 or less) 
  • Crayons 
  • Globes 
  • Graphing calculators (with a taxable value of $150 or less) 
  • Maps 
  • Notebooks 
  • Paper 
  • Rulers 
  • Textbooks 
  • Writing instruments 

Non-qualifying supplies include: 

  • CD players 
  • Copiers or other office equipment 
  • Furniture 
  • Fixtures 
  • Headphones 
  • Portable or desktop telephones 
  • Radios 
  • Sporting equipment 

Personal Computers 

Personal computers that cost $1,500 or less and any peripheral computer devices that cost no more than $1,500 can qualify for the tax-free weekend. A personal computer can be a laptop or desktop. It can also be a tower computer system, which consists of a central processing unit (CPU), random-access memory (RAM), a storage drive, a display monitor and a keyboard. 

Peripheral computer devices may include: 

  • Compact disk drive 
  • Daughterboard 
  • Digitizer 
  • Disk drive 
  • Microphone  
  • Modem 
  • Motherboard 
  • Mouse 
  • Multimedia speakers 
  • Printer 
  • Scanner 
  • Single-use hardware 
  • Single-user operating system 
  • Sound card 
  • Video card 

All cities, counties and special tax districts will waive state and local sales taxes. Those making qualified purchases will receive their tax waiver. Any businesses that have qualifying retail sales for the tax holiday should use the normal filing method for your August 2025 return.
