If you are a Missouri homeowner whose primary residence was damaged during qualifying 2025 disasters, you may be able to claim a state tax credit worth up to $5,000. This credit is intended to help homeowners offset the insurance deductible they paid when filing a claim for storm-related damage.
Below is an overview of who may qualify and how to claim the credit.
Who May Qualify
You might be eligible for this tax credit if the following conditions are true:
- You paid an insurance deductible in 2025 for damage to your primary residence (homestead).
- The damage was from a 2025 disaster for which the Governor of Missouri requested a presidential disaster declaration:
- The property serves as your legal homestead for tax purposes.
- You lived in the home for at least six months before the disaster occurred.
- Your homeowners or renters insurance policy was issued by a company licensed to operate in Missouri.
How to Claim the Credit
To request the credit, taxpayers must submit documentation with their individual income tax return.
Required steps include:
- Complete and sign Form 5926 – Homestead Disaster Tax Credit Affidavit.
This affidavit confirms:- The address and county of the damaged residence
- The date the disaster occurred
- Proof that the insurance deductible was paid as part of a claim under a qualifying homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy
- Attach supporting documents:
- Documentation from your insurance provider confirming the deductible
- Form MO-TC (Miscellaneous Income Tax Credits)
Submitting these materials with your tax return allows the state to review and apply the credit if eligibility requirements are met.
