What is a Video Interview and How to Prepare
Video interviews are increasing in popularity among companies, because they allow the company to get a feel for the candidate’s mannerisms and professional appearance without the cost of travel. Technology is large role in businesses, and they are moving to utilize it to the highest potential – especially if it is cost saving.
The number one mistake a candidate can make in a video interview is not treating it like an office interview. All of the same standards still apply. Not only do you still have to dress professionally, prepare for the interview, (i.e., research company and think about potential questions), and treat the interview as a professional meeting with appropriate manners. However, make sure you also take some extra precautions.
- First decide where the video will take place on your end. Make sure to have a blank background, in a quiet room with no distractions.
- If using Skype or another application, make sure your username is professional.
- Test the process out by setting up in the spot you have designated, and then practice with a friend. It is important to have a strong internet connection.
- During the interview, make sure you are looking into the camera. It may seem strange not to look at the screen but you want to look like you are making eye contact which will help you look confident.
Video interviews are just as important as office interviews and should be treated as so. Don’t forget with any type of interview to always send a thank you note. If you follow these tips and have a positive attitude then the interview should go smoothly.
