Danger of Fraud with IRS Impostors Calling

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) has issued a warning for taxpayers.  There have been more than 20,000 reports of fraudulent phone calls and thousands of victims.  The scam is not localized, but happening all around the country.

People are calling taxpayers with reports of taxes owed and the need to pay with a wire transfer or a pre-paid debit card.

If you receive a call like this, hang up and notify TIGTA at 1-800-366-4484.

Remember, the IRS may want your money, and you may actually owe them, but they will never attempt to collect with money transfers over the phone.
