Call to Serve: Anders YPs Build at Habitat for Humanity as Part of LEA Volunteer Week

Last Friday, the Anders young professionals teamed up with Habitat for Humanity, our 2013 Charity of Choice, for the third annual international Leading Edge Alliance (LEA) Volunteer Week.

LEA is the first accounting association to host a national week of service that encourages firms to send their young professionals out into their community and serve.  This year, nearly 30 firms from around the globe participated in the efforts.

Currently, the St. Louis Habitat for Humanity chapter is the process of building 10 homes in the Carondelet and University City neighborhoods. So, the nineteen Anders young professionals met up at Habitat’s warehouse to assist in preparing materials for interior walls and roofs that will be used at builds in various homes under construction. Volunteers also helped clean and restock the supply trailer that holds all of the various materials and tools that are used by hundreds of volunteers at the build sites.

It typically takes six months to build a Habitat home from start to finish and thousands of hours from hundreds of volunteers. While the Anders young professionals played a small role in the construction of these new St. Louis homes, we collectively contributed roughly 125 hours of service last Friday.

As CPAs, we spend hundreds of hours each year crunching numbers to minimize tax burdens of home ownership for many clients. Last week, we put the software and calculators aside and instead picked up hammers, nails and powers tools to help families achieve ownership of their own home for the first time.  It was a humbling experience and we were proud to serve.
